There is probably no state or city in the country that does not have a haunted place. What is a haunted place? A place that has been haunted by spirits from years. Believe it, or not real haunted places do exist. However, many places have been hyped because of their association with fancy stories that have been made over the years. In case you do not have a weak heart, you should dare to visit some of the haunted places in India and find out whether they are truly haunted or are part of gossip mills.

List of Haunted Places in India:

1. Bhangarh Fort- Rajasthan

Bhangarh is one of the most haunted places in India. The palace is located in the Rajasthan and has been declared unsafe by the government of the state. The ASI body has also marked a sign around the fort to warn locals and tourists to enter the premise after sunset or sunrise. It is believed that Bhangarh Fort was one of the marvels of the state in the 15th century. Fort was built by Bhaan Singh 1 in the year 1573.

 This picturesque place soon saw its downfall. There are many legends, according to one of them, there was a baba who lived near Bhangarh, he didn’t want any of the property to be higher from his house. However, the king of the fort did not believe the same, and soon the Baba cursed him. Another legend says there was a wizard who lives in the fort. He does not let the person come out alive

2. Graveyard in Dagshai – Himachal Pradesh

Dagshai is of the oldest cantonment town in India that resides in Himachal Pradesh. The place is considered to be haunted as 8th months pregnant women-Mary was buried here after her death. She was a British Army officer’s wife. It is believed that the graveyard is being blessed by the elf, and if any pregnant woman cut a piece of the marble from the graveyard, she would be blessed with the baby boy. Because of the same, the graveyard is no more in the best of the condition. Many have witnessed paranormal activities around at graveyard, but no one has been affected yet. It is said that to save her graveyard, Mary’s soul still visits the place. The cemetery is nestled in the mountains, which gives a mesmerizing ambiance.

3. Jamali-Kamali Mosque and Tomb- Delhi

Jamali Kamali Mosque and Tomb were constructed in the Archaeological Village complex in Mehrauli. It has two monuments, amongst which one is the tomb- Jamali, and Kamali, and another is a mosque with the same name as both- Jamali and Kamali are buried adjacents to each other in the tomb. Jamali was a celebrated Sufi saint. Kamli is believed to be Jamali’s disciple. The place is believed to be repressed by Jinns . Every Thursday, fakirs call upon Jinns. Visitors have shared that they have been slapped by the invisible forces and have heard voices from the grave, making this one of the most scariest places in India.

4. Delhi Cantonment Area- New Delhi

Next in our list, the scariest places in India are Delhi Cantonment Area. While the place does not reserve any legend for paranormal activities, many people have seen a lady in the white sari asking for the lift and subsequently chasing it. Nobody knows how much this is true. If you want to know the truth, you can cross the place at midnight.

5. Feroz Shah Kotla- Delhi

The fort was built in the year 1354, by Firuz Shah Tughlaq. It is believed that Jinns have conquered the fort, visitors claim that the local light candles incense stick on every Tuesday and fed on to Jinns in order to spare them and let them lead a happy and prospering life. Another one of the haunted places in India is Lothian Cemetery. While no one knows the exact reason why this place is counted amongst the country’s haunted places, however, if rumors are believed, the site was initially used as a burial ground of Muslims. However, the place was taken over by the Britishers. Many have experienced distinguished paranormal activities at the site.

7. Agrasen ki Baoli- New Delhi

Next in the list of haunted places in Delhi is Agresan ki Baoli. This is of the well-known monuments of the country. The baoli has been featured in many Bollywood movies. It was also showcased in The Amazing Race Australia 2 in the year 2012. The baoli is a beautiful site in the morning and is a perfect place for photoshoots like pre-wedding photoshoots. However, in the night, it is not believed to be safe. According to one of the stories, the well has black water that lures people to live.

8. Malcha Mahal- Delhi

Recently Malcha Mahal came into the limelight because of the various reasons, amongst them, one of the stories states that the Begum of the Mahal died in terrible condition and was buried in the Mahal itself. Her grave was even robbed that added to the mystery of the place. Also, it has been found that the sons of the Begum used to live in the same fort for years that too, without electricity, water, and light. In 2008 Begum committed suicide by gulping ashes of diamonds.

9. House Number W-3- Greater Kailash- New Delhi

According to one of the legends associated with this place states- an elderly couple was murdered and buried in their own house- W-3- Greater Kailash. To get justice, the souls of the couple visit the place. The story might sound like a horror film. Many adventure enthusiasts and travelers have visited the house. Surprisingly, the house has been bought by a family, and they have started living in the place after performing an array of pujas to make the place safe.

10. Sanjay Van- New Delhi

The sprawling forest is located around Kutub Minar in Mehrauli. It is one of the densely wooded forests in the capital city. The place is known for many good and bad reasons. One of the good reasons is the picturesque location itself. It is the perfect place for birds watchers as they will find different types of birds chirping throughout the day. Talking about its negative side, many passers-by have noticed a ghost of the women, though no story could back her presence. But people have experienced her numerous times in the forest. However, she has not troubled anyone yet.

11. GP Block- Meerut

The place does not have any illustrious story that could define why the site is considered as one of India’s most haunted places in India. According to many trespassers, they have seen women –loathed in a red sari around the compound. Many also rubbish the story and believe it to be a place for debauchery.

12. The Lambi Dehar Mines- Mussoorie

Known for its naturesque appeal, Mussoorie has an array of places regarded as top haunted places in India. The Lambi Dehar Mines, also called- The mines of death, is amongst the country’s scariest places. More than 50,000 people worked in the mine on one sad day; they all succumb to death because of a lack of infrastructure. The mine has been shut; however, many claim that they have heard unusual voices from and around the mine.

13. Mukesh Mills- Mumbai

Established in the year 1870, the Mukesh Mills by British East India. It was one of its kind mill that was constructed on the Arabian Sea shoreline. It had a massive port where cotton from the boats was unbundled. In the year 1982, a major fire broke in the mill, and thousands of people lost their lives. While the reason for the fire is unknown yet, however, many people have witnessed distinguished activities. The place has become one of the iconic places Bollywood movies. Owing to the same many of the actors, directors, and cast crews have observed numerous paranormal activities.

14. The Taj Mahal Palace- Mumbai

Also known as The Taj, it is one of the luxury hotels in Mumbai that is also one of India’s haunted places. According to the folk galore, the palace architect took his life in the hotel itself as the construction of the hotel did not shape in the way he has planned. People have found him loitering in the old wing of the hotel.

15.  Tower of Silence in Mumbai

Also known as Dekhma or Parsi Bawdi, Tower of Silence is a Zoroastrian funeral ground. The structure is built in the round shape. What makes it one of the real haunted places in India is that people have reported spooky feeling at this place. According to the Parsis tradition, a dead body is brought to the structure and is left to feed vultures.

The upper part of the structure is dedicated to the male body, the second part is for the female body, and the lower part is reserved for children’s bodies. It also has a massive hole in the middle where bones are collected. While it might sound scary, however, it is part of the Parsi’s custom. Over the years, the place created a buzz amongst the travelers, who stop by just to see, what the site is all about.

16. Three Kings Church- Goa

Located in the top of the hill in Cuelim, Three Kings Church offers a nice view, as at one side it has lush greenery and another side of the place boast a blue ocean.

 There are many horror stories associated with this haunted church. One of the ghost stories says that three kings ruled the Chapple; however, they used to bicker with each other. One of the kings killed the other two, and when the locals came to know about it, they came to take the revenge from him, the king got feared and killed himself. It is said that the ghost of three kings has conquered the place. Currently, the site has become a favorite in Bollywood as many Hindi movies as shot here.

17. The Vrindavan Society- Thane

It is a large residential complex with more than 100 flats. The Vrindavan Society has its spooky tale, which makes it one of the real haunted places in India. According to a horror story, a resident of the society committed suicide in society itself. Since then his ghost roams around the place. The spirit of the man has slapped many during the night, including the security guard. Some residents have also seen him in and around the society.

18. Raj Kiran Hotel- Lonavala

While the place does not have any haunted story, it makes it one of India’s haunted places. However, many visitors have seen strange blue lights, and their bedsheets have been pulled in the night. What happened in this hotel is a mystery for all. 19. Grand Paradi Towers- Mumbai

Grand Paradi Towers is amongst the biggest and oldest residential complexes in Mumbai. The tower is located in the most influential area-Malabar hill. Known for its architect, these towers are believed to be scary. If rumors are to be believed, years before an elderly killed themselves, in a suicide note, they pointed their son and his wife. As they were frustrated by them, years after, their son, his wife and teenage daughter also committed suicide in the same manner. Since then, their apartment has been jinxed. That’s not it; the tower has seen many suicides by now.

20. Kuldhara Village- Rajasthan

Kuldhara is a haunted place near Jaisalmer. The village has been isolated from years. According to the legends, the minister of the state- Salim Singh, wanted to marry the village’s head daughter. However, his offer was declined, and instead, the head called a council in which people from 85 villages came. After the council, people left the village. Some also say that the minister hiked the tax, and thus, locals moved from town. If you ever plan to visit a vacation in Rajasthan, do visit this village.

The place looks completely barren and spooky even in the day.

21. Ramoji Film City- Hyderabad

The city of Nizams is also home to many haunted houses and places, amongst all Ramoji film city has caught everyone fancy. It is a sprawling film city, where the shooting of movies take place. The film city is made on the battlefield of Nizams, and the spirits wandering around the place are believed to be of the soldiers who died on the battlefield.

22. Khairatabad Science College- Hyderabad

There is a building called Tarapuri around Khairtabad Flyover, which was a science college. Years before, the building fell into ruin. The dead bodies used in the Biology lab were not discarded properly. Many have witnessed skeleton-like body moving in and outside the building, along with mysterious voices. A security guard was stationed at the building who had a mysterious death. This has made the building one of the most haunted places in Hyderabad.

23. Jatinga- Assam

Unlike usual death stories, Jatinga is known for birds’ suicide. Yes, you read that, right! The tribal village and the only hill station in Assam-Jantinga has been a death bed for many birds. After monsoon in the month of September, many migratory birds flock to the hill station and are doomed to death. Some believe that the hill station is no less than Bermuda Triangles. Some have also said that the locals of the place kill birds intentionally. While there is no proof of any of the statements, the sites remain to be haunted.

24. The Shaniwarwada Fort- Pune

Known to be one of the landmark sites in Pune, The Shaniwarwada holds historical significance. The Wada was owned by Narayan Rao, who was an heir of Baji Rao. According to the legends, he was atrociously killed in the Wada itself. Many also believe the place caught fire, and many succumbed to death in the fire. People have witnessed uncanny activities around the place because the locals and travelers are discouraged from visiting the place after 6:30 pm.

25. The Mansion- Residency Road, Pune

The Mansion is one of the haunted houses in Pune. Though there is no haunted story behind the house; however, many believe that an evil-old woman haunts the house. The locals have observed eerie sounds and laughter screaming from the place. Because of the same, no one dares to pass by the resident post evening.

26. Chandan Nagar- Pune

Over the years, Chandan Nagar in Pune has become one of the famous haunted places in India. All thanks to its ghost story that is no less than a tale of Horror movies of Hollywood and Bollywood. Going by the haunted tale, a young girl died in Chandan Nagar due to a construction mishap. The locals have seen her ghost in the frock along with the doll many times in the night. 27. Dumas Beach- Surat- Gujarat

Next in the list of haunted places in India is Dumas Beach of Gujarat. The beach is no less than a god’s home in the morning and as soon as the day turns into the night; the place becomes the devil’s paradise. Surrounded by the Arabian Sea, the place is known for its black sand and Hindu Burial ground. Many haunting spirits possess the beach. According to folklore, the color of the sand in Dumas beach is black due to the ashes that have been created by burning dead bodies. 28. Sindhrot Check Dam-Ahmedabad

Sindhrot boasts a mesmerizing dam that is a famous spot for couples and friends in Ahmedabad. While the place seems to be pleasant in the morning, however, during the night, the place turns into a haunted dam thus, it is counted amongst the scariest places of Gujarat. If locals are to be believed, they have seen a young girl in the traditional dress.

People could see only half of her face, which itself is mysteries. She asks people to leave the place and warns them not to enter the village with girls. Nobody knows her past, and are clueless about what turned her into a ghost.

29. D’Souza Chawl- Mahim

The chawl has a well that is used by residents to fill water and wash clothes. The well does not have good structure because of which few years back, a woman collapsed in the well and succumbed to a painful death. Ever since the event has taken place, the residents of the chawl have witnessed the ghost of the woman in the chawl. Though the spirit is not harmful, however, the residents are asked not to visit the well in the night.

30. Dow Hill- Kurseong- West Bengal

Darjeeling is one of the ideal cold places in India for summers. People across the country visit the hill station to view its natural vistas and enjoy ideal weather. The place is also home to one of the haunted places in the country. 30 km away from Darjeeling, there is a place called Kurseong that boasts Dow hill. The area is haunted by numerous spirits. It also has a school- Victoria Boys High School, where one can hear the voice of footsteps, echo of voices even on the holidays, when the entire school is empty.

31. Bengal Swamps- West Bengal

West Bengal has a number of haunted places, which include Bengal Swamps. Unlike other swamps, Bengal Swamp is completely lighted and is known as Aleya ghost lights. People still don’t know the scientific reason behind the light. However, due to the light, many fishermen in the area have lost their lives. Locals have found many dead bodies around the swamp, making it one of the country’s haunted places.

32. National Library of India- Kolkata

Have you ever thought a library could be a haunted house? The building is believed to be the home of the first Governor-General of the East India Company- Warren Hastings. When he was alive, he was charged with false allegations; the allegations were later called off. However, his soul still roams in the premises to find the paper that could prove his innocence. While he has not attacked anyone, people, especially security guards carry Hanuman Chalisa to save themself from the ghost.

33. South Park Cemetery- Kolkata

34. Writers Building- Kolkata

Founded in 70’s writer’s building was the office for the writers who worked in the British East India Company. What turned this academically flourishing place in a haunted home is the murder of the colonel Simpson- the general inspector who ill-treated Indian prisoners. No worker or employee stays at the place post evening. The building’s 5th block where he was shot is one of the least used areas in writer building.

35. The Brij Raj Bhawan Palace- Rajasthan

The palace was once a residence of Major Charles Burton and later converted into a heritage hotel. The palace is infamous due to the spooky stories according to which The Major was murdered here in 1857 by Indian soldiers. Their dead bodies were buried in the Kota cemetery. Many say that Major and his family still lurks in the corners of the Bhawan, making it one of the haunted places in India.

36. Fernhill Hotel- Ooty

Counted amongst the most haunted hotels in India, Fernhill Hotel came into limelight when the Bollywood horror movie-Raaz was shot there. The cast and crew experienced many eerie stories that have irked many over the years. The hotel is now shut, but people often visit nearby areas to know about the hotel and its past in detail.

37. Vas Villa- St. Marks Road- Bangalore

Though the villa has been demolished now, and the land has been used to construct a new property. However, a few years back, the villa was termed as one of Bangalore’s scary places. E J Vaz owned the house, and after his death, his two daughters -Vera Vaz and Dolce Vaz lived in the villa. According to the folklore, Dolce Vaz was stabbed and was buried in the house itself, following which her sister shifted to another place. The villa soon saw its ruin; people have heard the sound of crying and ghostly faces.

38. Kalpalli Cemetery- Bangalore

Kalpalli Cemetery or St John’s Cemetery is built around the old Madras road. Visitors who have visited the graveyard after dark has shared spooky tale. According to them, they have witnessed restless souls around. Some also say that there is a man who wanders in the cemetery. Many have even felt uneasy at the graveyard, which makes it a real haunted place in India.

39. Bangalore International Airport

Kempegowda International Airport is home to ghosts. Though, the international airport is not a real haunted place. However, many, including pilots, have seen a woman in white saree in different airport areas. While many find it a rumor but those who have experienced have got chills in the spine.

40. Victoria Hospital- Bangalore

Going by the folk galore, decade’s back, a woman died in Victoria hospital. It is now believed that the woman visit the hospital and steel packed food from the premises. Many have also experienced the woman wandering in the hospital and have heard loud voices as well. However, she has not heart anyone.

41. Tunnel 33- Shimla

Tunnel 33 is the longest tunnel on the route of Kalka Shimla. The tunnel was constructed by Colonel Barog, who committed one of the biggest mistakes that lead to the misshape of the tunnel. Because of the same, he committed suicide. The tunnel was later corrected. Though people have found the ghost of Barog at times but find him friendly.

42. Parsi Graveyard- Nagpur

Known to be Parsi’s crematorium is one of the best places for the people who want to experience paranormal activities. Most of the visitors have experienced supernatural activities at the graveyard. Some have also reported the presence of a human-like spirit. This has created a buzz amongst the travelers.

43. Lakkidi- Kerala

According to one of the legend, the Lakkidi-the rainforest was discovered by a British engineer and local men- Karinthandan, who was later killed by the engineer. The British engineer wanted to take all the accolades for the discovery of the place. Years later, travelers have felt a man at the home who is believed to be Karinthandan. Though the priest has performed a cleansing ritual at sight, people still believe it to be a haunted place.

44. The Karkardooma Delhi Court

The Karkardooma Delhi Court was termed as a haunted place in Delhi after people experienced a series of paranormal activities. To find the truth, authorities also installed CCTV cameras in the court. To your surprise, the CCTV caught strange activities that included the opening and closing of the drawers. People also saw a figure that emerged from the walls. Spooky isn’t it!
